Fun day on the Facebook Front

Fun day on the Facebook Front
The good news (in a sense) for Facebook today came when a federal judge decided to delay his ruling on the Connect-U vs. Facebook lawsuit because the judge didn't have enough infront of him to determine if the case was really, well, a case, and even seemed to get a little upset with the Connect-U people saying "Dorm room chit chat does not make a contract." The judge then went on to say "You haven't told me anything other than there's something out there."

The federal judge gave Connect-U until August 8th to get its you-know-what together so he can see if there really is a case here.

The Facebook / Connect-U saga gets even better as CNBC is now reporting that Facebook might also have a lawsuit planned against Connect-U "for allegedly trying to hack into Facebook in order to steal the e-mail addresses of users, and to try to lure them to Connect-U."

And to top it all off ... even with all the lawsuits that seem to be swirling around Facebook, the company has managed to hire YouTube's former CFO, Gideon Yu.

I guess is just a normal day in the life of Mark Zuckerberg.

Microsoft and DIGG are joining forces?

Microsoft and DIGG are joining forces?
PC World is reporting that Microsoft and DIGG have joined forces to make Microsoft the exclusive provider of display and contextual advertising on DIGG.

This might be the first step towards Microsoft gobbling up DIGG to help boost their online share in the social network field ... which wouldn't be a bad thing at all (except to all the current DIGG users and Microsoft Haters ... which I guess would be a good percentage of the web).

Yeah, I know ... 50-Cent has really nothing to do with Technology EXCEPT when you see his new office space that King Mag just profiled.

Lord Nikon said it best ... "You're in the butter zone now, baby!"

TiVo announces their new HD DVR

TiVo announces their new HD DVR
TiVo has found yet another way to piss off your local cable company with their announcement of TiVo HD DVR.

The new TiVo HD DVR, expected in stores this August, has all the great features of TiVo PLUS a Digital Cable Ready set-top-box that works with any cable provider in the U.S. What does this mean? Say goodbye to those annoying monthly cable-box rental fees!

"TiVo HD extends the TiVo experience to an even wider audience than ever, giving sports and entertainment enthusiasts the ultimate companion to their HDTV set," said Tom Rogers, CEO and President of TiVo. "It is the ultimate media centerpiece for the living room with the broadest selection of broadband content, right alongside your favorite broadcast and cable programs, giving HDTV viewers more choice and control than they've ever had before. And it can be used in place of the customer's existing cable box."

A little breakdown on what to expect in this new TiVo ...

- Compatiable with digital cable, analog cable and digital antenna (ATSC)

- 20 hour of HD or up to 180 hours of standard definition recording time.

- Record two HD channels while watching a 3rd channel at the same time.

- Built-in Ethernet Jack

- Two CableCARD slots and USB ports

- Movie & TV Downloads from Amazon.com, Home Movie Sharing and universal Swivel(TM) search

The TiVo HD will reportedly retail for just $299.99, almost $500.00 cheaper than TiVo's Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder that TiVo released earlier this year. Currently TiVo is taking pre-orders for the HD DVR from their website and expect the product to be available for retail purchase sometime this August.

UPDATE: Amp'd has changed closing date to July 31st.
Posted on July 24, 2007 / TELL-A-FRIEND ABOUT THIS!

Amp'd Mobile has given current US customers 8 more day before they "potentially suspend US opertaions" than we originally reported.

According to the Amp'd Mobile Q&A webpage, the company has changed the date from July 23rd to July 31st ... however they are still listing July 23rd as the last day customer service will be provided to current US customers, which was yesterday and it seems as if that is holding true. They've already disabled the CUSTOMER SERVICE link on their website which now goes to a 404 (Page Not Found) page. The customer service page for their Canada department however still functions properly.

And just an update on the ordering situation ... again we were allowed to type in our ZIP code, select a service plan and a phone, but were presented with the same error message as before.

Bye Bye Amp'd Mobile!
Posted on July 22, 2007 / TELL-A-FRIEND ABOUT THIS!

Bye Bye Amp'd Mobile!
Less than two years after offering service in the United States, Amp'd Mobile will be "suspending" its US operations beginning on July 24th.

According to Amp'd Q&A page (not sure why they posted it here) ...

Is Amp'd going out of business?
Amp'd is potentially suspending US operations on July 24th.

How long will customer service be provided to help with issues such as ports or credits?
Customer Service will not be available after July 23rd.

It's not like we didn't see it coming since Amp'd filed for Chapter 11 at the beginning of June, however I'd be a little ticked off if I were a US Amp'd customer had to find out that my service was going to be "potentially" terminated July 24th by having to surf over to a random part of the Amp'd website. At least to me this seems like a big deal, not something to be pushed under the rug, so why didn't Amp'd even make the smallest mention of it on the front of their website?

To make things even more confusing, US customers can still go through the whole ordering process, from selecting a plan, phone and addons and then right before the checkout screen they are shown the following:

Wouldn't you think if you planned on ceasing US opertaions in 48 hours that you wouldn't allow people to even get that far? And that instead of saying "We will not be offering service in the United States anymore", you just show a generic error message?

Even better, wouldn't you think you'd notify your distributors/resellers in the United States about the decision instead of telling people to contact their local dealer or even Best Buy (which you still can purchase Amp'd service plans from as of writing this post)?

Now I understand, at least going by the news release over at the press room on Amp'd Canadian website that Amp'd "has not filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and is continuing to conduct normal business operations" however then goes on to state "Amp’d Mobile Canada is committed to providing our mobile subscribers with an excellent wireless experience and intends to deliver uninterrupted services throughout the U.S. restructuring."

So how is "potentially suspending US operations" go along with the intention to "deliver uninterrupted services throughout the U.S. restructuring"? Did the U.S. restructuring not goes as planned, and if it didn't, why didn't you mention that on the Q&A part of the website? Yeah, I know you don't want to piss off your Canadian customers, but what about the hundreds of thousands of customers in the United States that you are dropping? Don't you think they deserve a little bit of consideration since, after all, they have been paying you.

Anyways, if this was how you treated your customers when they were part of your service, I am defintely happy that I use AT&T and T-Mobile for my mobile phone needs. Good Luck Canadians ... you'll probably be next!

UPDATE: Engadget is reporting that current US Amp'd customers received a text message today (July 22nd) saying their service may be terminated as early as Tuesday at 12:01am. Wow ... thanks for giving them less than 48 hours notice.

PriceFad allows you to track the price trends on your favorite products

PriceFad allows you to track the price trends on your favorite products
I have this problem of tracking prices on various products for months and months before actually pulling the gun on the purchase. Yes, this doesn't seem very weird for a techno-nerd like myself, however I always try to find the best price possible. So when I heard about this new website called PriceFad I knew it was right up my alley.

According to the website ...

We wanted to give you the best historical view before pulling the trigger - be that researching on a broad category, say 46in LCD TVs or a specific product, say: TomTom ONE XL GPS, or even to compare two alternative products, say Samsung 19in LCD vs. Viewsonic 19in LCD. The PriceFad allows you, the consumer, to see historical market direction and understand whether today's deal is really a deal. If you are patient enough, you can also register for a price drop alert so you won't be missing anything.

I surfed around the website for a little bit this afternoon and am pretty impressed with the website. Going by my searches it looks as if the website "crawls" various deal websites such as FatWallet.com for keywords and then creates the "data" from the posts it finds. The only downside I could see from this is if its automated in its data collecting, then the data might be skewed by people who mis-type or fake deals on various shopping retailers. I didn't test this out as I don't want to get flamed/banned from any of these deal forums, so hopefully the people over at PriceFad worked something into their algorithm to account for these types of posts.

But all in all, PriceFab is a very solid website for those who addicted to price-tracking and I defintely recommend checking it out when making your next purchase.

XM releases new Universal In-Car XM Receiver
Posted on July 21, 2007 / TELL-A-FRIEND ABOUT THIS!

XM releases new Universal In-Car XM Receiver
The CommanderNT, XM's latest radio receiver, is designed to integrate into any vehicle's dash and work with any automobile's AM/FM stereo, no matter the make, brand, or year. The CommanderMT features a four-line display and a tuning knob for channel selection.

The CommanderMT works with the portable XM Mini-Tuner, a compact removable cartridge containing the XM subscription that can be used to access XM Radio programming through other compatible car and home products.

The one aspect of the receiver that isn't mentioned is how it handles heat. Currently I'm using an XM Roady II and after maybe 30 minutes of usage, the unit is so hot that it can actually burn your skin. Hopefully XM and Audiovox worked on this issue with the CommanderMT, otherwise you'll have some very unhappy XM customers.

Anyways, look for the CommanderMT to hit the stores sometime later this month with a pricetag of around $179.99.
